Čarna


It resulted from a cross between 'Majova rana' x 'Schrecken Bigarreau' in 1969 and was named and released in 1988. The breeders were prof. Dr. Asen Stančević, prof. Dr. Mihailo Nikolić and Anica Mutapović, BSc in agriculture.


The tree is medium vigorous to vigorous. The trunk is upright and strong, ash-gray. The crown is branched, with somewhat sharper-angled main branches. Fruiting spurs and longer fruiting branches with numerous fruit buds at base are predominant. Vegetative buds are pointed, flower buds are long-conical, medium thick, rounded at the tip. The leaf is medium large, long-oval, serrated. The petiole has two red leaf glands. The flower is regular, hermaphrodite, white and distinct. It flowers mid-early. Its best pollinators are cvs 'Bigarreau Hativ de Burlat', 'Bing', 'Van', 'Stella', 'Sunburst', etc. 'Čarna' is moderately resistant to the causal agents of pests and diseases with tolerance to drought and low temperatures.


The fruit is medium large to large, averaging 7 g, blunt cordate, with unpronounced suture line. Dimensions: height - 20.8 mm; width - 23.3 mm; thickness - 19.8 mm. Skin color is deep red to black. The flesh is carmine red, crisp, juicy, sweet, of pleasant aroma. The juice is also colored making this cultivar colorant. It contains about 16% soluble solids, 0.7% total acids and 13% total sugars. The stone is small and roundish. The stalk is thin, medium long, semi-deep, set within the open cavity. Fruit ratio is 95%. In rainy periods fruit cracking occurs to an economically acceptable extent, up to 30%.


Fruits of sweet cherry 'Čarna' ripen in the fourth week of ripening of sweet cherry, concurrently with 'Van'.


High quality cultivar that may be used as a colorant in industry. A good cropper with high shipping quality.
